World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Upgrades to an item are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it can increase the rarity of an item, or its Mark Level, and also boost other stats.
Each item comes with a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a specified amount.
Item Level
When an item gets upgraded, its basic stats improve in value. The value is the sum of all of its upgraded benefits (attack, magic attack and defense). The cost of upgrading items can be high depending on the upgrader you choose and the kind of upgrade you decide to do. This is due to the variety of perks that have to be altered to upgrade an item.
The level of an item is a commonly used measurement of power and can be seen on all tooltips for items. It can also be used to limit the amount of PvP gear players can use as PvP is restricted at lower levels. The average level of an item is listed on the character sheet.
Using the item level will allow players to compare the power of equipment when deciding to purchase or sell. It's a useful gauge of an item's worth and the amount of damage it's capable of dealing with. The item level can also be used to evaluate items when looking at a vendor's inventory.
The item level can be viewed by pressing the ALT key on PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the item's full description, including the ilvl. It is also accessible by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel into chat.
There are various theories about how the calculation of an item's level is done. One theory is that the level is a number that comes from a formula that determines the value of an item's stats are worth. It takes into account the fact that different perks have different values and that sockets have gems that increase the overall value of the item. This can lead to an item's ilvl which is calculated and is often very close to Blizzards actual item level.
This isn't the only factor that affects the ilvl of an item. The level of the area where the item dropped can also change its stats. For instance, it could increase the item's haste or crit score. Items that drop in higher-level instances will have a higher ilvl.
Item Stats
The stats of an item can make or break an item for players. The game uses a variety of them in various ways to encourage players to use multiple weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the most effective." The stat mods of a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then increased by a player's skill.
Upgrades to the item add by boosting certain stats on the item. The rarity of an item determines its upgrade cost. For example, a grey or white item can only be upgraded once, whereas items with rare tiers will be upgraded several times with higher prices.
Another method of altering the stats of an item is through affixes. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and they come in all shapes and sizes. Affixes are used to provide items with extra damage, special capabilities (such as reviving dead or reducing cooling downs) or to differentiate them by putting a name on them.
Presently, all affixes are able to be changed by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button using the arrows that circle. It will cost a set amount in gold and items. They can also be used as upgrade gauges, just like the other methods of rerolling.
Players can upgrade an item by specific stats, or reroll the affixes. The possible stat ranges for an item are based on the level of the item, however all items are guaranteed to have at least one stat within that range, unless it is a unique item or the result of a God roll from a boss in a raid.
This is another thing that can be modified by adding an option to upgrade the equipment without having to reroll the affixes, or selecting which stats to boost. Like the base equipment, it will have to be done per item, and the interface for item comparison would not display all the possible stats at once.
Item Luck
A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the likelihood of finding items and the properties that are spawned from loot drops and the intensity of these properties. However, it doesn't directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player an opportunity to get better gear earlier in the game. This is particularly beneficial in early game runs because players tend to put defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.
In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chances of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This isn't to be confused with the Blacksmith’s overall chances of upgrading, which increase with each level of the item. It is also possible to be increased by using anti-materials such as the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.
Weapons, armor, and shields can spawn or be crafted with the Luck property, which has the default value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on their material type) to add another 40 luck, or to increase an item's existing Luck up to 140.
Furthermore some items, like the Hollow infused weapon can be used to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items are available in the shop or created using the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Not all upgrades work. However, there are cash shop items that allow players to increase their chances of success or even prevent themselves from losing an item in the event that the upgrade is unsuccessful.
When you upgrade an item the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the probability of successfully upgrading that item and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The chance of success can only be increased as much, and the chance that the upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%.
The luck of an item can influence the success of an upgrade. All items have an average success rate of 25%, and every item with Luck increases that chance by an additional 5percent.
Note that item upgrades are rendered above the inventory items therefore enchantment glints and other effects can be obscured by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
