Their decisions were influenced primarily by four factors that included their personalities and multilingual identities, their current lives, as well as their relationships. The MQ data was first analyzed to determine the participants' practical choices. The data were categorized according to Ishihara's (2010) definition of pragmatic resistance. The results showed that CLKs, on average, did not conform to the patterns of native speakers in more than 40% of their responses. They did this despite the fact that they could create patterns that resembled native ones. They were also aware of their pragmatism resistance. They attributed their decision to learner-internal variables such as their identities and personalities as well as multilingual identities. They also referred to external factors, like relationship affordances. For example, they described how their relationships with professors led to more relaxed performance in relation to the linguistic and intercultural norms of their university.
However, the interviewees also expressed concerns about the social pressures and penalties that they might face if they flouted the local social norms. But it is advisable for future researchers to revisit their usefulness in particular situations and in various cultural contexts. This will enable them to better understand how different cultural environments can affect the pragmatic behavior of students in the classroom and beyond.
