To compare corneal endothelial cell changes after femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) in diabetic and nondiabetic patients.
This retrospective study included patients with cataract who underwent FLACS performed by a single surgeon between August 2018 and November 2020. Changes in corneal endothelial cell density (ECD), hexagonality, coefficient of variation in cell size (CV), and central corneal thickness (CCT) at baseline and at the 1-month and 3-month postoperative follow-ups were investigated by dividing the patients into diabetic and nondiabetic groups.
We included 75 patients (60% men, mean age 57.7±11.4 years, range 27-80 years) in the analysis 31 diabetic patients (64% men, mean age 58.7±11.9 years, range 27-79 years) and 44 nondiabetic patients (56% men, mean age 57.1±11.3 years, range 34-80 years). No differences were observed between the two groups as regards preoperative and intraoperative parameters, the mean postoperative ECD, hexagonality, and CV. At 1 month postoperatively, the CCT was significantly greater in the diabetic group (P=0.034); however, at 3 months, there was no significant difference between the two groups (P=0.927).

To determine the repeatability of corneal measurements from anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) images using ImageJ software in healthy eyes compared with eyes with keratoconus.
Anterior segment OCT images of 25 eyes from 14 healthy subjects and 25 eyes from 15 subjects with keratoconus between the ages of 20 and 80 years were evaluated. Two trained observers used ImageJ to measure the central corneal cross-sectional area and anterior and posterior corneal arc lengths. MedCalc statistical software was used to generate the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland-Altman plots (BAPs) for observer measurements.
Observer measurements of the central corneal cross-sectional area and anterior and posterior corneal arc lengths yielded an ICC >0.7. The ICC comparing the 3 parameters ranged from 0.75 to 0.84 for the control and 0.96 to 0.98 for the keratoconus group. No systematic proportional bias was detected by the BAPs. There were minimal differences between the 2 observer's measurements, with a mean of the difference of 0.3 mm2, 0 mm, and 0 mm, for the 3 measurements, respectively.
This study suggests that ImageJ software is a repeatable and reliable tool in the analysis of corneal parameters from AS-OCT images among patients with keratoconus and may be applicable to AS-OCT imaging protocol development, an area of active keratoconus research.

Hemodialysis secondary hyperparathyroidism patients were randomly divided into the control group and treatment group. The control group was treated with routine treatment, and the treatment group was treated with sodium thiosulfate based on the control group. The changes of serum calcium, phosphorus, whole parathyroid hormone, calcium-phosphorus product and coronary artery calcification (CAC) score, as well as the relief of clinical symptoms, postoperative complications and recurrence in the preoperative and postoperative periods were observed. The levels of C-reactive protein and CAC scores were significantly decreased in the treatment group after treatment. While there was no significant difference in blood calcium, blood phosphorus, PTH, calcium-phosphorus product, and CAC score in the control group after treatment. And after treatment, the proportion of skin pruritus, myasthenia, bone pain, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, and other symptoms in the treatment group was significantly decreased compared with those before treatment, but there was no significant change in the control group before and after treatment. Sodium thiosulfate can reduce the high level of CAC in hemodialysis patients obviously.This study evaluated the effects of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in combination with a percutaneous adjunctive left ventricular assist device (LVAD) in a porcine model during 60 minutes of refractory cardiac arrest (CA). Twenty-four anesthetized swine were randomly allocated into three groups given different modes of circulatory assist group 1 ECMO 72 ml/kg/min and LVAD; group 2 ECMO 36 ml/kg/min and LVAD; and group 3 ECMO 72 ml/kg/min. During CA and extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR), mean left ventricular pressure (mLVP) was lower in group 1 (p = 0.013) and in group 2 (p = 0.003) versus group 3. Mean aortic pressure (mAP) and coronary perfusion pressure (CPP) were higher in group 1 compared with the other groups. In group 3, mean pulmonary artery flow (mPAf) was lower versus group 1 (p = 0.003) and group 2 (p = 0.039). If the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) was achieved after defibrillation, up to 180 minutes of unsupported observation followed. All subjects in groups 1 and 3, and 5 subjects in group 2 had ROSC. All subjects in group 1, five in group 2 and four in group 3 had sustained cardiac function after 3 hours of spontaneous circulation. Subjects that did not achieve ROSC or maintained cardiac function post-ROSC had lower mAP (p less then 0.001), CPP (p= 0.002), and mPAf (p = 0.004) during CA and ECPR. Add-on LVAD may improve hemodynamics compared with ECMO alone during refractory CA but could not substitute reduced ECMO flow. Increased mAP and CPP could be related to ROSC rate and sustained cardiac function. Increased mLVP was related to poor post-ROSC cardiac function.
The purpose of this study was to report the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the clinical outcomes of infectious keratitis in South India.
Two hundred fifty-eight patients presented with infectious keratitis at 6 tertiary care centers when strict travel restrictions were in place from March 24 to May 31, 2020. Case records were collected retrospectively and analyzed for demographics, type of initial treatment, length of delay in presentation, microbiological diagnosis, clinical course, and final treatment outcome.
The mean age of the patients was 49.2 years, with most of them (61.2%) being male. Forty-one patients (15.9%) did not receive any treatment for at least a week after the onset of symptoms. One hundred eight patients (41.9%) presented with severe ulcer (32 had a frank perforation). Resolution of the infection was achieved only in 103 patients (45.6%). A total of 90 patients (39.8%) with ulcers had a perforation, yet only 29 patients (32.2%) could receive keratoplasty because of the unavailability of donor tissues. At the end of 6-month follow-up, 47 patients had anatomical failure (loss of globe) and 12 additional patients had functional failure (total permanent vision loss).

Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) is an effective treatment to slow down keratoconus (KC) progression in adults. Several studies have also shown efficacious outcomes in pediatric populations, yet no systematic analysis has been performed and no accepted definition for progression is available in children after CXL. This study aimed to establish the most commonly used criteria for progression and to conduct a systematic review of the literature with pooled analysis to assess children's keratoconus progression after CXL.
A systemic literature review combined with pooled analysis was performed on full-length studies of KC after CXL treatment in a pediatric population and the methods used to report progression were analyzed.
Thirty-seven studies (2078 eyes) were identified on the rates of KC progression after CXL. The most common method to report progression was increased Kmax, Kmean, or Ksteep by ≥1.0 diopter (78.3% of studies). The purpose of this study was to compare objective, noninvasive assessments of tear function using the OCULUS Keratograph with the corresponding clinical assessments [tear break-up time (TBUT), Schirmer test, and bulbar erythema] among patients with moderate-to-severe dry eye disease.
